#KeepFighting – Bram Van Aarle
In 2008 I got ill. A burn out was diagnozed after a few months of struggling. At the end of August 2008 I did my last session in court and never came back. Being a lawyer ended there. Treatment for a burn out didn’t work. Sessions with psychologists didn’t work. I did want to work but I knew physically and mentally I couldn’t handle it.
In November 2008 I was diagnozed with brain cancer. A tumor was found in the middle of my brain around the Pineal gland. In Europe, this cancer is usually found in children at 12-14 years of age. Getting a germinoma at that age would have been a certain death for me. In 1980 there was no treatment for germinoma. Getting it at 40 years of age saved me! Water on the brain caused by the tumor made my life almost unbearable. Slowly, you can’t walk anymore. You can walk a few yards, and then you need to stop for a rest.
Sometime after I had undergone surgery and other medical therapies, Mazz Nicholas of V0iD’s record label, Raven Black Music, sent me the Beaten and Bruised Album by V0iD. At that time I was out, really out. I heard Beaten and Bruised and suddenly I heard the words ‘down but not out!’ The music helped me a lot to overcome my disease. It helped me to accept that I was unable to work as a lawyer again. My memory and concentration lacked. Fatigue became part of my life. During that period I underwent intensive treatment for my ongoing recovery. Medicines for a fear disorder helped me to be more at ease. I took up ‘Nordic’ walking, which became a huge part of my life, and my recovery continued. Six years have passed, and I’m still walking 8 miles a day! #KeepFighting
V0iD sing ‘Keep on dreaming, keep believing!’…and so in 2015, the year to come, ‘#KeepFighting!’ will be released and I will be following the trails of the Caledonian Canal. Wandering around Fort William.
People like me survive against all odds. I imagine my life would have ended before I got connected with bands such as Big Country and V0iD. Meeting V0iD in Belgium in the summer of 2014 was a confirmation of honest people in my life that make distinct music. In a way, V0iD saved me, like Big Country did. Sure, I am still sad about things that I am unable to do anymore, but, ‘..every disadvantage has it’s advantage.’ as Cruyff would have said. Nowadays, I am serving as an volunteer, cooking for demented elderly people. I live around the area of Maastricht, Holland. These people have come to know me, they all live through memory, and while it took me nearly 2 years to reach their minds, I have stayed and they now all know me…
… If you keep fighting, you can reach your goals.
